MLGers learning to be Youth Ambassadors in Elementary Schools

Cowichan Intercultural Society’s Multicultural Leadership Group (MLG) has been nominated for a British Columbia Multicultural Award!  On Friday, November 18th, Linda McDaniels, MLG Co-ordinator, will travel to Vancouver, BC to meet hundreds of other multicultural champions. The Government of BC is celebrating and applauding their combined efforts toward making the province of BC a more inclusive place to live.

img_1440This is the tenth year that Cowichan Intercultural Society’s Multicultural Leadership Group has gathering together youth and adults from different cultures, traditions and identities! MLG is a group that practices Inclusive Leadership, generosity and the spirit of giving week in and week out from September to June. The Multicultural Leadership Group engages youth and adults from diverse backgrounds in organizing and participating in community service. These weekly events, community projects and school projects are all aimed at building welcoming and inclusive schools and communities that are free of discrimination.

a1So far, this season, over a hundred Multicultural Leaders have been involved in connecting people from diverse cultures and generations: Making peace flags for the International Day of Peace, painting signs for the annual Walk of All Nations, facilitating Inclusive Leadership workshops, intercultural celebrations and more! Plans for the coming months include community dinners, youth safety projects, and inclusive dance and art projects.

Multicultural Leaders are Diversity Stars!

The outcomes of MLG are expansive and heart-warming. MLG has provided a sanctuary for many who have experienced exclusion and other forms of discrimination. For others it has provided the opportunity to become allies. Together MLGers have empowered each other to transform struggles to fit-in into opportunities to stand out by creating positive change in their community.
